The body of the vertebra, or vertebral body, is one of the main parts of the vertebra. It is present in cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. The body is located on the anterior aspect of the vertebra. The anterior surface is convex whereas the posterior surface is concave and forms part of the border of the vertebral foramen. It varies in shape, size and proportions in different regions of the vertebral column. From the second cervical to the third lumbar vertebra, the vertebral body increases in width due to the increased weight-bearing function of the lower vertebrae. L4 and L5 vary in size, but from S1 onwards the body then decreases in size.
