After completing this study unit you will be able to: 

  1. Identify and name the muscle groups found in the hip and thigh region. 
  2. Describe the attachments, innervation and functions of the muscle groups as well as the individual muscles in each group. 
  3. Appreciate the appearance and relations of each muscle.

The muscles of the hip and thigh are divided into three major groups:

  • Gluteal muscles, comprised of superficial and deep groups.
  • Iliopsoas muscles
  • Thigh muscles, that are subdivided into the anterior, medial and posterior groups.
