Ankle joint

Learning objectives

After completing this study unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify the bones that form the ankle joint and their articulating surfaces.
  2. Name the main ligaments that reinforce the ankle joint.
  3. Get familiar with the movements performed at the ankle joint.

Watch video

The ankle joint (a.k.a. talocrural joint) is formed by the articular surfaces of the distal parts (malleoli) of the tibia and fibula and the body of the talus and is classified as a type of synovial hinge joint. It is supported by a complex set of strong ligaments providing it with stabilization to manage the entire body weight against the ground forces below.

Watch the following video and learn everything you should know about the ankle joint, its articulations, ligaments and movements.

Take a quiz

Now that you have watched the video about the ankle joint, test your knowledge by taking our quiz about the bones and ligaments associated with it.

Customize the following quiz in order to test your knowledge about the bones, muscles and ligaments of the entire foot region.
